  1. Working Together to Design a Sports Themed Boy’s Bedroom

    November 13, 2011 by admin

Perhaps your son plays little league or maybe he just idolizes his favorite majors player.  Either way, he’ll give you his favorite team.  Whatever his answer is, that your first step in creating the perfect baseball themed bedroom.

    Colors

Your son’s team-of-the-century choice will give you the colors you’re going to be using to redecorate his room.  My son’s favorite team was the St. Louis Cardinals, so I knew right off that we’d be working with dark red.  You’ll find that pretty much every team imaginable shares one thing in common – white is their secondary color.  This goes a long way in simplifying the process and allowing us to work more on the actual design rather than waste time searching for the perfect shade of teal.

    Paint

When you begin to decide on paint, keep in mind that spending a couple of dollars more will ensure you get a better quality finish.  Flat latex paints are appreciably cheaper but are all but guaranteed to not only pick up but also show dirt especially badly.  Spend the extra few dollars and get semi-gloss latex paint.  It definitely costs a little more but makes cleanup a breeze.

But Where Do I Put the Paint?

Don’t reinvent the wheel, just keep it traditional and classy.  Look  at the team’s accenting.  Are the letters stroked in a different color?  Perhaps a bright secondary color or a darker shade of the primary color?  In the case of my son’s fave – the St. Louis Cardinals – the accents are just a darker shade of red.  Paint things like window frames, trim and moulding with the accent color.  Don’t forget to paint the outside of your child’s door to match the interior walls.  You might hate the color, but he and you both will get over it eventually.

Consider downloading a stencil of the team’s logo and painting it on the wall.  Take note, though, that this generally isn’t as easy as you think it will be.  Team logos are designed by highly-paid professionals and don’t always scale down well to the average joe painting it onto the wall.  In my case, the Cardinals’ “STL” logo was relatively simple.  Practice on some spare wood beforehand and make sure you can do it.  If you manage to pull it off, it looks great on the semi-gloss latex paint.  Hopefully you nail it!

    Accessories

Keep an eye out for things like pencil holders and trash cans to accessorize with.  Your local Target will likely have a lot of these things in your son’s favorite team’s colors.  These are generally cheap and easy to find.  Just be careful not to overdo it and make things look tacky.  A good rule of thumb is to have no more than 5 store-bought branded accessories with the team’s logo on it.  That will avoid the monotony of the same exact image over and over.

  2. Decorating a Tween or Teen Boy’s Bedroom in a Baseball Theme

Do you have a son who absolutely lives and breathes baseball? Then you have an advantage! It is relatively easy to decorate a teen boy’s room when you have a sports theme to work around.

    Where do you start?

First, get your son involved! Does he have a favorite team? Listen to what he likes and doesn’t like. He’s the one who’s going to live in the space, so he should have a say. If you get him involved, he’s more likely to keep his room neat and organized.

Next, look at the colors of your son’s favorite team. For example the Oakland A’s use a color scheme of white, hunter green and golden yellow. Their arch rivals the Los
Angeles Dodgers use two colors, deep royal blue and white. The New York Yankees use navy and white with a white and navy striped uniform. The San Francisco Giants use white in the uniform and red and black for cap and logo.

As you can see, all the teams share white as a common color. White is always a safe color for walls, but it picks up dirt easily, especially if you use flat latex paint. Most boys are serious dirt trackers! Make white easy to clean by using a semi-gloss latex. It costs a bit more, but it cleans up easily. (more…)

  3. Spiderman Night Light

    June 18, 2011 by admin

A great way to ‘cuten’ up a little boy’s bedroom!

Spiderman nightlight that is great to use in more than bedrooms when you need a little light source. Uses very little energy and has a shade on it to prevent it from being too bright for the little ones sleeping.

  6. Ideas for decorating a toddler boy bedroom?

    February 3, 2011 by admin

I just finished painting the walls in my soon to be 3 year old son’s bedroom. The paint is called "Guacamole" . Its a very warm rich green. My trim is dark wood, which I hate (I like white trim but I’m renting). I’m having a tough time decorating because his dresser is white and the toddler bed is a pine color. I’m not willing to paint the dresser and I really prefer to use what we have already. I love the look of pottery barn, but can’t really afford to spend the money. Can you help me come up with some affordable ideas to make it look like a cool, & fun big boy bedroom. I’m not into themes because his likes change so often. But one thing that always stays the same is cars, trucks and trains. I could decorate by displaying cars and picture frames with cars&airplanes themes. I"m not sure. Possibilities are endless. I also need an idea for curtain color. I’d like to add a play table and an easel. I’m also making an underbed train table as a surprise. Thank you for reading my post.

Just a thought. Try downloading a printing pictures of high end cars and exotic planes or trains. Then frame them and put them up in his room. For extra touches add a small collection of Maisto cars in cases for display. By the way many car dealers will give you free booklets and on occassion you can get promo items(i.e. we got a Porsche flag for our sons room). Maybe a few light weight model planes hanging from the ceiling. And if your able put a 6" shelve about 18" from the ceing around the entire room and set up a electric train on it. Put a switch some where on the wall out of his reach for now(he’ll enjoy turning it on when he five or so, but not now he may break it to easily). Also for the curtians try a dark green or Dark purple(aka Royal Purple). By the way a extra nice touch is a rug for a kids room has a play scape on it (usually a road and such). I know it sounds like a lot, but it works out nicely. It’s what we are doing for our sons room.

  7. I need your ideas!!! Boys 50′s bedroom, what to use on screen divider??

    January 26, 2011 by admin

I have decorated a bedroom for a boy in the vintage 50′s era. The theme is "everything" to do with a small boy in the 50′s, baseball, tinkertoys, marbles, Daniel Boone, Babe Ruth etc… My problem is I need to use a screen divider. The frame is built, now I cannot decide what to cover it with. Please help, I need lots of ideas!!!!!!

How about the red coaster wagon, or a young boy walking to his favorite fishing spot with his devoted and loyal dog, or the Bat mobile….?
My brother used to be a faithful watcher of the Rifleman (maybe a cowboy hat and a rifle with a set of cowboy boots with spurs)

  8. any ideas for an almost 5 boys bedroom (who is crazy about cars and any vehicle really)?

    January 17, 2011 by admin

we need decorating ideas…the room is a bit small, but has floor to ceiling windows with a sea view. he looooovess cars and the color blue.

you can paste a full wall picture (high resolution) of a view from a racing car on one wall… it could show the dashboard and the road ahead… looks cool… and the other things can take a backseat while the concentration is on the wall… go for denim bed spreads and curtains… you get lots of shades to choose from… and they’ll run well till he’s into his teens… what more… he can even make shorts out of the faded curtains later!!!!

  9. Does anybody have any creative ideas for decorating a boy’s camoflauge bedroom?

    January 9, 2011 by admin

We have painted the walls army green and have the camoflauge bedspread…looking for some really unique (and inexpensive) touches.

Go to your nearest Army surplus store. Camo netting for curtains might be cool, and I’m sure you could pick up some really cool stuff at the surplus store, maybe old boots fashioned together to make a side table base. Old Army recruiting posters, or go by a recruiting station and see if they have any that they could give to you.

  10. Decorating Ideas For a Boy/Girl Shared Bedroom?

    December 25, 2010 by admin

I have a 4 year old boy and a 2 year old girl. They have to share a bedroom at this time, and was hoping to get some ideas on how to decorate their bedroom.
    Thanks!

Try a light lime-green for the walls. There bead spreads should be different colors, like the girls light pink and the boys light blue. Make the room fun, add black and white pictures of them on the walls. Give them each a little nook (that your 2 year old will eventually grow into). Bright colors. Etc.

  12. DECORATING TIPS NEEDED i want to create the coolest room for my 9 year old boys bedroom.. He likes spiderman..

    December 11, 2010 by admin

i will do whatever it takes to make the coolest room.. but i dont know how!!!!!!! he likes outerspace to.. and Im getting a bunk bed.
I was thinking of doing a mural on the wall of outer space.. but should I paint the walls black? what colours will give me the effect of the burning sun?

Paint the spiderman swinging on his net or just standing somewhere leaning against a building. Get some cut outs of plywood and make them into buildings so spiderman can swing between them and jump on them. Make a mural of the sky with the sun setting on one side and the moon on the other with all the stars and moon and the yellow orange sun. Paint the clouds and maybe some fighter planes between them. Make some of the furniture looking like buildings and maybe a science lab or something like that.
    good luck
